The low down on homework...

 Te Ako Titoki

Homework:

Homework will be given to student on a Monday and come home that evening in their homework books.  A large part of the homework will be utilising the amazing online resources we have at our fingertips.  If this is a problem for your family then please email individual classroom teachers.

Reading - most children are now reading independently and this might include novels, journals, news articles, comics, magazines, non-fiction texts.  In years 3 and 4 we are making the shift from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn'.  Please encourage your child to complete 15-20 minutes reading per night and then sign their 'Read with Me Club' form which is in their homework books.  One a child has completed the first 25 nights they will work towards gaining '50 Club' membership and so on.  Reading should also involve a parent discussion about the book your child is reading.  If you still read with your child,  please ensure that they are doing the majority of the reading each night.  Questioning your child on their understanding is crucial and some question prompts will come home shortly.

Maths - Maths is focused on number knowledge and basic facts.  This helps your child when learning maths strategies in their classroom sessions.  Each week two websites will be given to children based on the learning that they are doing in class.  If you require hard copies of the basic facts sheets then this can be arranged or printing sheets off http://www.prototec.co.nz/maths.html is also a great resource.

Other - This could be related to our concept work, writing, spelling, grammar or ICT skills.  The task will change each week but it will be designed to enhance children's thinking about their learning.  Later in the year this task might also be on the students Google Docs account.

Please note that if hard copies are give out, it will be up to parents to mark the basic facts.
